Think about the last time you searched for something like "mobile repair near me" or "CA in Model Town". You probably looked at the three businesses on the map, checked their stars and called one of them. You likely did not scroll down to the websites below.
That is how most local customers in Panipat behave too. For a shop, clinic, coaching centre, showroom or service business, the Google Maps result is often more important than the website. The good news is that it is free to manage, and most of your competitors are not doing it properly.
How Google decides who shows up
Google says local results are based on three things:
- Relevance: how well your profile matches what the person searched for.
- Distance: how far you are from the person searching, or from the area they mentioned.
- Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, based on reviews, links, mentions and more.
You cannot move your shop closer to every customer. But you can do a lot about relevance and prominence. Here is how.
Step 1: Claim and verify your profile
Go to google.com/business and search for your business. If it already exists (sometimes customers or Google create it), claim it. If not, create a new one. Google will ask you to verify it, usually by video, phone or postcard. Do not skip this step. An unverified profile will not perform well.
Step 2: Choose the right categories
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses. Pick the one that describes your main business as exactly as possible. For example, "Dentist" is better than "Health consultant" if you run a dental clinic. Then add a few secondary categories for other services you genuinely offer.
A quick tip: search for your main service in Panipat and look at the categories used by the businesses in the top three. It gives you a good idea of what Google expects.
Step 3: Fill in every detail
- Your real business name, exactly as on your board and documents
- Full address with a correct map pin
- Phone number that is actually answered
- Website link
- Opening hours, including special hours on festivals like Diwali
- A clear description of what you do, written for customers, not stuffed with keywords
- Your services or products, with short descriptions and prices where it makes sense
A complete profile gives Google more information to match with searches, and it gives customers fewer reasons to go elsewhere.
Step 4: Add real photos, and keep adding them
Upload photos of your shop front (so people can find you), inside the shop, your team, your products and your work. Avoid stock images. Add a few new photos every month. Profiles with fresh, genuine photos tend to get more clicks and calls.
Step 5: Get genuine reviews, steadily
Reviews are one of the biggest factors for both ranking and trust. A few things that actually work:
- Create your review link from the profile dashboard and save it on your phone.
- Ask happy customers right after the job is done, when they are most likely to agree.
- Send the link on WhatsApp with a short, polite message.
- Aim for a steady flow, a few reviews every month, instead of 50 in one week and then nothing.
Do not buy reviews or ask friends to post fake ones. Google actively removes them and can restrict your profile.
Step 6: Reply to every review
Thank people for good reviews by name. For negative reviews, stay calm, apologise where it is fair and offer to sort it out offline. Future customers read your replies, and a polite answer to a complaint often builds more trust than a page full of five stars.
Step 7: Keep your details the same everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number (often called NAP) should be identical on Google, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Facebook, your website and any other listing. If one site says "Shop No. 12, GT Road" and another says "Near Old Bus Stand", Google gets mixed signals. Pick one format and use it everywhere.
Step 8: Post updates
You can publish short posts on your profile: offers, new products, festival greetings or recent work. It takes five minutes and shows both Google and customers that the business is active. Once a week is a good habit.
Step 9: Connect it with your website
Your website and your profile support each other. Make sure your website shows the same address and phone number, has a page for each main service, and mentions the areas you serve, such as Model Town, Sector 13-17, Samalkha or Israna, where that is true. Adding a Google Map on your contact page also helps customers.
Mistakes that can get your profile suspended
- Adding keywords to your business name, like "Sharma Electronics Best AC Repair Panipat"
- Using a virtual office or a fake address
- Creating more than one profile for the same business at the same location
- Posting or buying fake reviews
What to expect
Local ranking is not instant. If your category is not very competitive, you may see more calls within a few weeks. In busy categories, it usually takes two to three months of steady work. Keep adding photos, collecting reviews and posting updates. It adds up.
